Sulzer ABS AFLX / VUPX Pumps
Spare Parts for ABS AFLX Mixed-Flow & VUPX Propeller Column Pumps
Product Summary
Genuine and compatible spare parts for the Sulzer ABS AFLX submersible mixed-flow column pump and VUPX submersible propeller pump, the large in-pipe pumps used across Australia for stormwater and flood protection, irrigation and drainage schemes, return activated sludge (RAS) and raw or process water intakes. Both install into a column pipe on a self-centring coupling ring and share the same PE3 – PE7 motor platform, so tick what you need and we’ll match the parts to the type code on your nameplate.
Spare Parts List
✓ Tick the parts you need. AFLX and VUPX parts are matched to the hydraulic size, impeller or propeller type, motor size (PE3 – PE7), pole count and any gearbox, so the type code and serial number on your nameplate are all we need to get them right. Not sure which items? Add a photo of the nameplate and we’ll work it out for you.
| Select | Wear / Service Item | Function & when to replace |
|---|---|---|
| Common Service Kits | ||
| Impeller / Propeller | The AFLX open mixed-flow impeller (3 to 5 blades) or the VUPX axial propeller (3 or 4 blades, fixed skew or adjustable pitch). Replace if blades are eroded, cavitated, cracked or bent by debris. | |
| Wear Ring / Inlet Bellmouth | The adjustable inlet bellmouth (AFLX) or wear ring (VUPX) that sets the running clearance. Adjust to restore efficiency after wear; replace when the clearance can no longer be recovered. | |
| Mechanical Seal Set | The double mechanical seals between the hydraulic and the motor (SiC/SiC on the medium side). Replace after a moisture (DI) alarm in the inspection chamber or water in the seal chamber oil. | |
| O-ring & Gasket Set | The O-rings, gaskets and plug seals for the seal, inspection and motor chambers. Renew at every seal change or overhaul. | |
| Seal & Inspection Chamber Oil | The seal and inspection chamber oil fill. Check every 12 months and change straight away if contaminated with water or after a seal alarm. | |
| Power & Control Cable | The submersible power and sensor cables (EMC shielded for VFD duty), with cable entry seals. Replace if the sheath is damaged or water has wicked into the connection chamber. | |
| Other Core Parts | ||
| Bearing Set | Heavy-duty upper and lower bearings, with an electrically insulated upper bearing on PE6/PE7. Replace on a bearing temperature alarm, noise or vibration, and always with new seals. | |
| Moisture & Temperature Sensors | The DI moisture probes and winding or bearing temperature sensors that protect the motor. Replace if faulty or giving false alarms after a repair. | |
| Outlet Diffuser | The cast diffuser above the impeller or propeller that guides flow up the column. Replace if eroded, cracked or corroded. | |
| Coupling Ring | The conical ring in the column pipe that the pump self-centres and seals on. Replace if worn or corroded so the pump no longer seats cleanly. | |
| Gearbox Service Parts | Gear oil, seals and bearings for the planetary gear unit on larger AFLX 1202 – 1207 and VUPX 1001/2 – 1201/2 builds. Service at oil changes or if the gearbox runs hot or noisy. | |
| Lifting Chain & Shackle | The lifting chain, shackle and cable sock used to raise the pump from the column. Replace if corroded, stretched or out of inspection. | |
| Complete Replacement Pump | When a rebuild doesn’t stack up, we quote a like-for-like AFLX or VUPX from the type code and serial number on your nameplate. | |
How we confirm the exact part: AFLX and VUPX parts depend on the hydraulic size, impeller or propeller type and blade setting, motor size (PE3 – PE7), pole count, voltage, gearbox, materials and any Ex approval. Your nameplate carries the type code, item number and serial number, which together pin down the build. Tick the items above and add a nameplate photo, and we’ll confirm the correct parts for your exact pump.
Models
Spare parts are available for every AFLX and VUPX hydraulic in the Sulzer range; the hydraulic size (e.g. AFLX 1202 or VUPX 0801) is part of the type code on your nameplate; on adjustable VUPX sizes a final 1 means a 3-blade and a final 2 a 4-blade propeller (VUPX 0801 / 0802).

Both series: liquid temperature up to 40 °C, max. submergence 20 m, inlet screen required, bearings rated for 100,000 hours minimum, moisture (DI) probe in the inspection chamber and thermal switches in the stator as standard. AFLX and VUPX PE7 units: maximum 15 starts per hour. ATEX, FM and CSA explosion-proof versions are available as an option.
Troubleshooting
Moisture (DI) alarm or water in the oil
Likely cause: a worn mechanical seal or failed O-ring letting water into the inspection or seal chamber. Action: check the inspection chamber oil and change it if contaminated; if the alarm returns soon after an oil change, replace the mechanical seals and O-rings in a workshop.
Flow has dropped off
Likely cause: opened-up clearance at the inlet bellmouth or wear ring, eroded impeller or propeller blades, or a blocked inlet screen. Action: clean the screen, then adjust the bellmouth or propeller axially to restore clearance; replace the wear ring and impeller or propeller if worn beyond adjustment.
Rags or fibre on the blades
Likely cause: fibrous material wrapping the impeller or propeller leading edges, often from screen bypass or too wide a bar spacing. Action: lift and clean the hydraulic, check the screen bar spacing against the Sulzer table for your hydraulic, and keep the slotted wear ring clearance set.
Vibration or noise
Likely cause: poor sump inflow or low submergence causing vortices, damaged or unbalanced blades, the pump not seated in the coupling ring, or worn bearings. Action: check water levels and inflow, inspect the blades and the coupling ring seat, and replace the bearings if bearing temperature or vibration sensors are alarming.
Thermal trip on the motor
Likely cause: overload from blades set too steep, debris, low or unbalanced voltage, or too many starts per hour. Action: check current against the nameplate, clear the hydraulic, check supply voltage, and keep starts within the allowed limit.
Bearing temperature alarm
Likely cause: worn or damaged bearings, often from vibration or stray VFD currents on non-insulated bearings. Action: take the pump out of service and replace the bearing set (with seals); on VFD duty use shielded cable and an insulated upper bearing.
Gearbox runs hot or noisy (geared units)
Likely cause: low or contaminated gear oil, or worn gear unit bearings. Action: check and change the gear oil, look for water ingress, and overhaul the gear unit if noise persists.
