Sulzer ABS Piranha Pumps
Spare Parts for ABS Piranha Submersible Grinder Pumps
Product Summary
Genuine and compatible spare parts for the Sulzer ABS Piranha submersible grinder pump, the cutter-equipped sewage pump used across Australia in pressure sewer systems, rural subdivisions, caravan parks, schools and commercial sites where small-diameter rising mains replace gravity sewers. From the domestic Piranha 08/09 through the Piranha S to the IE3 Piranha PE, tick what you need and we’ll match the parts to your nameplate, such as Piranha PE55/2D-E.
Spare Parts List
✓ Tick the parts you need. Piranha wear parts are matched to the version (08/09, S, S HH or PE), motor size, phase and volute, so the type code on your nameplate is all we need to get them right. Not sure which items? Add a photo of the nameplate and we’ll work it out for you.
| Select | Wear / Service Item | Function & when to replace |
|---|---|---|
| Common Service Kits | ||
| Cutting System | The hardened stainless shredding rotor and stationary cutting ring that macerate solids ahead of the impeller. Replace when cutting performance drops, flow falls away or the pump starts ragging; inspect more often where sand is present. | |
| Bottom Plate | The adjustable spiral bottom plate that carries the cutting ring and sets the impeller clearance. Reset the gap as it wears; replace when it is grooved or damaged beyond adjustment. | |
| Impeller | The pump impeller behind the cutter (two stages plus diffuser on S HH models). Replace if worn, chipped or damaged by a jam, and reset the bottom plate gap afterwards. | |
| Mechanical Seal Set | Piranha PE runs double mechanical seals; Piranha S uses a SiC mechanical seal with an oil-lubricated lip seal on the motor side. Replace after a leakage sensor (DI) alarm or water in the seal chamber oil; seals must not be re-used once removed. | |
| O-ring & Gasket Set | The O-rings, gaskets, seal rings and drain-plug washers for the seal chamber, housings and cable entry. Renew whenever the pump is opened. | |
| Seal Chamber Oil | The seal chamber (and PE motor chamber) oil. Check every 12 months and change straight away if it is contaminated with water or after a seal alarm. | |
| Other Core Parts | ||
| Power Cable | The submersible supply and sensor cable, fitted via a plug-in terminal block on non-Ex models. Replace if the sheath is cut, crushed or wicking water. | |
| Bearing Set | Lubricated-for-life upper (single row) and lower (double row) ball bearings. Replace if the pump is noisy or rough on a dry spin, and always with new seals. | |
| Leakage Sensor (DI) | The moisture probe that trips the pump before water reaches the motor. Replace if faulty or giving false alarms after a seal and oil change. | |
| Volute / Diffuser | The cast iron pump casing, with the inner diffuser on high-head S HH models. Replace if worn through, cracked or eroded at the discharge. | |
| Pedestal & Guide Rail Fittings | The pedestal bend, guide claw and bracket that let the pump be lifted out on its rails. Replace if worn, corroded or no longer sealing at the discharge. | |
| Lifting Chain & Shackle | The stainless or galvanised lifting chain and shackle used to pull the pump. Replace if corroded, stretched or out of inspection. | |
| Complete Replacement Pump | When a rebuild doesn’t stack up, we quote a like-for-like Piranha from the type code on your nameplate. | |
How we confirm the exact part: Piranha parts depend on the version (08/09, S, S HH or PE), motor power and poles, phase, volute size and any Ex approval. Your nameplate carries the type code (e.g. Piranha PE55/2D-E), item number and serial number, which together pin down the build. Tick the items above and add a nameplate photo, and we’ll confirm the correct parts for your exact pump.
Models
Spare parts are available across the Piranha range; in the type code, the number after PE or S is motor power in kW × 10 and the number after the slash is the pole count (e.g. PE55/2 = 5.5 kW, 2-pole).
Models & Key Specifications
| Version | Models (50 Hz) | Motor P2 | Discharge | Max. head / flow (50 Hz) | Shaft sealing |

| Piranha PE (C volute) | PE30/2D-C | 3.0 kW | DN 32 / G 1¼" | 70 m / 22 m³/h (range) | Double mechanical seals |
| Piranha PE (E volute) | PE55/2D-E – PE110/2D-E | 5.5 – 11 kW | DN 50 | 70 m / 22 m³/h (range) | Double mechanical seals |
All versions: 2,900 rpm (2-pole) or 1,450 rpm (4-pole) at 50 Hz, liquid temperature 40 °C (max. 60 °C for 5 minutes), cast iron casing, impeller and bottom plate, cutters in hardened stainless steel 1.4528 (58 – 62 HRC). Piranha PE runs IE3 motors with a 10-pole cable terminal block. 60 Hz versions (S20, S30, PE25 – PE125) reach up to 82 m and 27 m³/h. ATEX explosion-proof builds available on S and PE.
Troubleshooting
Pump won’t run – leakage sensor (DI) shutdown
Likely cause: water in the seal chamber from a worn or cracked mechanical seal, a damaged O-ring or a loose or damaged oil plug. Action: check the drain plug and seal ring, then replace the mechanical seal and O-rings and change the oil. Repeat alarms soon after an oil change mean the seal must be replaced in a workshop.
Pump trips on start or hums – impeller jammed
Likely cause: rags, wipes or hard objects caught between the cutter, bottom plate and impeller, often with a worn cutting system. Action: isolate and lift the pump, remove the bottom plate and cutting ring and clear the debris (never by hand), check the impeller and cutters for damage, then reset the bottom plate gap.
Low head or flow
Likely cause: wrong rotation on a three-phase pump, too wide a gap between impeller and bottom plate from wear, a worn cutting system, or a partly closed valve. Action: check rotation and swap two phases if needed, reset the bottom plate clearance, inspect and replace the cutter set, and open valves fully.
Pump cycles on and off on its own
Likely cause: the winding thermal sensors are tripping on overheating, usually from a partial blockage, low voltage or too many starts. Action: let the motor cool (it resets automatically), check the thermal relay settings and supply voltage, and clear any blockage; if it keeps happening the pump needs a service inspection.
Pump runs but doesn’t pump
Likely cause: an air lock in the volute, a closed gate valve or a blocked non-return valve in the rising main. Action: raise and lower the pump to vent the volute, then open the gate valve and clean the non-return valve; check that floats are free and not tangled.
Excessive noise or vibration
Likely cause: worn bearings, a clogged impeller or wrong direction of rotation. Action: clear and clean the hydraulics and check rotation; if it is still rough, replace the bearing set together with the seals.
Cutters wearing quickly
Likely cause: sand and grit in the wastewater, or running with too wide a bottom plate gap. Action: inspect the cutting system regularly where grit is present, keep the bottom plate gap set, and replace the shredding rotor and cutting ring together.
