Sulzer ABS SB / XSB Flow Boosters
Spare Parts for ABS SB and XSB Flow Boosters
Product Summary
Spare parts for the Sulzer ABS SB and XSB flow boosters, the large slow-turning geared propellers that keep oxidation ditches, carrousel and circulating activated sludge tanks moving at Australian treatment plants, including the SB-KA versions built for moving-bed biofilm carriers. From 900 mm up to 2,750 mm propellers, tick what you need and we’ll match the parts to the type code on your nameplate, such as SB 1623 or XSB 2522 M.
Spare Parts List
✓ Tick the parts you need. SB and XSB parts are matched to propeller diameter, propeller type, motor size, gear ratio and pedestal type, so the type code and serial number on your nameplate are all we need to get them right. Not sure which items? Add a photo of the nameplate and we’ll work it out for you.
| Select | Wear / Service Item | Function & when to replace |
|---|---|---|
| Common Service Kits | ||
| Propeller | The large two-blade propeller (composite, polyurethane or stainless steel on XSB). Replace if blades are cracked, eroded or out of balance, as damage cuts thrust and causes vibration. | |
| Mechanical Seal | The medium-side shaft seal that protects the oil chamber and gearbox. Replace at overhaul or when the leakage sensor (DI) alarms. | |
| Solids Deflection (SD) Ring | Keeps rags and grit off the mechanical seal behind the propeller hub. Replace if worn or scored when the propeller is off. | |
| Propeller Fixing Parts | The key, fixing ring, O-rings, Nord-Lock® securing washers and socket head screw that hold the propeller. Renew whenever the propeller is removed. | |
| Seal Chamber Oil & O-rings | Hydraulic oil for the seal chamber plus the plug seals and O-rings. Change at the basic overhaul or after a seal failure. | |
| Other Core Parts | ||
| Gearbox | The multi-stage gearbox that slows the motor down to propeller speed. Gearbox oil and repairs are a Sulzer-trained workshop job; quoted by model and ratio. | |
| Motor Connection Cable | The power and control cable. Replace if cut, crushed or chafed; never lift the booster by its cable. | |
| Leakage Sensor (DI) & Thermal Sensors | The DI moisture sensors and stator temperature sensors. Replace if they fail a function test or give false alarms. | |
| Coupling Bracket | The bracket that docks the booster onto the coupling piece at the foot of the guide tube. Replace if worn, bent or corroded so the unit seats and locks properly. | |
| Pedestal & Guide Tube Parts | The coupling piece, guide tube, guide tube holder and locking parts for variant A or B installs. Replace if worn, loose or corroded. | |
| Cable Tensioning Parts | The steel support cable, rope tensioning device and clamps that keep the power cable clear of the propeller. Replace if frayed or corroded. | |
| Complete Replacement Unit | When a rebuild doesn’t stack up, we quote a like-for-like SB or the current XSB equivalent from the type code on your nameplate. | |
How we confirm the exact part: SB and XSB parts depend on propeller diameter, propeller type, motor size, frequency, gear ratio, pedestal type and whether the unit is a standard or Ex build. Your nameplate carries the type code (e.g. SB 1623), item number and serial number, which together pin down the build. Tick the items above and add a nameplate photo, and we’ll confirm the correct parts for your exact flow booster.
Models
Spare parts are available for every SB and XSB size; the first digits of the hydraulic code are the propeller diameter in decimetres (e.g. SB 1623 = 1,600 mm).

All SB/XSB: IP68 motor, insulation class F, maximum medium temperature 40 °C, maximum immersion depth 20 m, 400 V 50 Hz standard (460 V 60 Hz available), ATEX explosion-proof option. XSB thrust up to 6.2 m³/s circulation (50 Hz) with a 3-stage helical gearbox. Installed on a steel or concrete pedestal with guide tube.
Troubleshooting
Heavy vibration or uneven flow
Likely cause: propeller not fully covered, air drawn in from nearby diffusers, wrong direction of rotation, a damaged propeller, or a loose bracket or coupling. Action: switch off and inspect; check submergence and distance from the aeration grid, confirm rotation, replace a damaged propeller and check the coupling bracket and guide tube are locked.
Leakage sensor (DI) alarm
Likely cause: moisture in the seal chamber, gearbox or motor from a worn mechanical seal or damaged O-ring. Action: lift the booster, check the seal chamber oil, and replace the mechanical seal, SD ring and oil; have the gearbox checked if the gearbox sensor has tripped.
Thermal trip or overload
Likely cause: rags or debris on the propeller, wrong rotation, or a seized gearbox bearing. Action: clear the propeller, confirm rotation and current draw against the nameplate, and check the gearbox turns freely by hand.
Booster won’t couple or lock on the pedestal
Likely cause: worn or bent coupling bracket, debris on the coupling piece, or a guide tube out of plumb. Action: lift out, clean the coupling piece, check the coupling in an empty tank as the IOM describes, and replace a worn coupling bracket or guide tube parts.
Flow velocity in the channel has dropped
Likely cause: eroded or damaged propeller blades, rag build-up, or the booster sitting at the wrong angle. Action: inspect and replace the propeller and SD ring, clean off rags, and check the pedestal and guide tube set the correct position.
Gearbox noise
Likely cause: worn gearbox bearings or gears, or low or contaminated gearbox oil. Action: take the unit out of service; Sulzer says gearbox oil refills should only be done by a qualified technician. We can quote the gearbox parts or an exchange unit.
