Sulzer J Series Pumps
Spare Parts for Sulzer J Series Submersible Drainage & Dewatering Pumps
Product Summary
Wear parts, seals and motor parts for the Sulzer J series submersible drainage pumps, from the portable J 4 to the 56 kW J 604, used across Australian mines, quarries, tunnels and construction sites to dewater dirty, abrasive water. Tick what you need and we’ll match the parts to the model on your nameplate, such as J 205ND.
Spare Parts List
✓ Tick the parts you need. J series parts are matched to the pump size, ND or HD hydraulic version, voltage and starter type, so the model and serial number on your nameplate are all we need to get them right. Not sure which items? Add a photo of the nameplate and we’ll work it out for you.
| Select | Wear / Service Item | Function & when to replace |
|---|---|---|
| Common Service Kits | ||
| Impeller | The abrasion-resistant white cast iron impeller with a full upper shroud. Replace when worn, chipped or when flow has dropped and adjusting the wear ring no longer brings it back. | |
| Wear Ring | The adjustable rubber-coated ring under the impeller. Reset to 0.1–0.3 mm clearance as it wears; replace when the rubber is down to 2 mm or uneven. | |
| Mechanical Seal Unit | The double mechanical seal in an oil bath with silicon carbide faces (a plug-in seal unit on J 205 and J 405, separate primary and secondary seals on J 604). Replace when the oil turns milky or the leakage sensor alarms. | |
| Repair Kit | Sulzer lists a preselected repair kit of service parts for each of the J 205, J 405 and J 604. Ideal for the recommended annual overhaul; we quote it from your model. | |
| Oil & O-ring Set | Paraffin (white) oil for the seal chamber (2.5 L on J 205, 3.0 L on J 405, 6.2 L on J 604) with new oil plug and housing O-rings. Change at every seal check or overhaul. | |
| Power Cable & Cable Seal | The rubber power/control cable and its gland seal and washers. Replace a cut, crushed or water-logged cable, and always fit a new cable seal once the old one is removed. | |
| Other Core Parts | ||
| Diffuser | The rubber-lined diffuser around the impeller. Replace when the lining is worn through or torn. | |
| Wear Plate | The plate above the impeller that protects the oil casing. Replace if worn or the impeller back clearance (0.5–1.0 mm) can no longer be set. | |
| Strainer & Base Plate | The inlet strainer and base that keep oversize stones out of the hydraulics. Replace if cracked, holed or the openings have worn oversize. | |
| Ball Bearing Set | Sealed, greased-for-life upper and lower bearings (open lower bearing on J 604). Replace at overhaul or if water has reached the oil or motor. | |
| Stator | The motor winding with built-in thermal contacts. Replace (or rewind) if insulation stays below 1 MΩ after drying, or after water ingress. | |
| Contactor / Terminal Block | The built-in contactor or terminal block in the connection chamber. Replace if contacts are burnt, or when changing supply voltage. | |
| Complete Replacement Pump | When a rebuild doesn’t stack up, we quote a like-for-like J series pump from the model on your nameplate. | |
How we confirm the exact part: J series parts depend on the pump size, ND or HD hydraulic version, discharge size, voltage and frequency, starter type (contactor, terminal block, star-delta or SoftDrive) and the pump’s build date. Your nameplate carries the model (e.g. J 205ND) and the serial number, which together pin down the build. Tick the items above and add a nameplate photo, and we’ll confirm the correct parts for your exact pump.
Models
Spare parts are available for current and earlier J series sizes; the number after J on your nameplate (e.g. J 205ND) is the pump size and the ND/HD suffix is the hydraulic version.
Models & Key Specifications
| Model | Rated power | Discharge | Strainer openings | Weight |

| J 12 | 0.9 – 1.4 kW, 1 or 3-phase | 1½ – 3 in | 8.5 mm | 18 – 19 kg |
| J 15 | 1.4 kW, 1 or 3-phase | 1½ – 3 in | 8.5 mm | 19 – 21 kg |
| J 205 ND/HD | 21 kW, 3-phase | 4 – 8 in | 8 x 34 mm | 155 kg |
| J 405 ND/HD | 35 kW, 3-phase | 4 – 8 in | 8 x 34 mm | 270 kg |
| J 604 ND/HD | 56 kW, 3-phase | 6 – 10 in | 12 x 60 mm | 525 kg |
All sizes: liquid temperature up to 40 °C, immersion depth up to 20 m (J 5: 9.5 m), double mechanical shaft seal in an oil bath. Head and flow depend on size and ND/HD version; see the Sulzer brochure curves. Impeller to wear ring clearance 0.1–0.3 mm; seal chamber white oil 8–10 cSt.
Troubleshooting
Flow or head has dropped off
Likely cause: wear opening up the clearance between the impeller and the wear ring, a blocked strainer, or a worn impeller and diffuser. Action: remove the base plate and strainer, clean them, and tighten the nuts under the wear ring to reset 0.1–0.3 mm clearance; if the wear ring rubber is down to 2 mm or the impeller is worn, replace them.
Seal leakage monitor alarm
Likely cause: water entering the oil chamber past the lower seal; a reading below 100 kΩ between the leakage lead and earth confirms it. Action: drain and inspect the oil; if milky or full of sediment, replace the mechanical seal unit (or both seals on J 604), check the lower bearing and refill with fresh white oil.
Pump stops and restarts on its own (thermal trip)
Likely cause: the stator thermal contacts are tripping from overheating: a blocked strainer or impeller, mud packed around the cooling jacket, a voltage problem or a worn pump overloading the motor. Action: clear the strainer and hydraulics, clean the outside of the pump, check supply voltage and current, and check the thermal contact circuit for continuity.
Pump trips on start or won’t run
Likely cause: damaged cable or water in the cable gland or motor, low insulation, or burnt contactor points. Action: inspect the cable and plug, megger the windings at 500 V (minimum 1 MΩ; never megger 1000 V pumps with the ground check diode connected), dry or replace the stator and renew the cable seal if water has got in.
Low output after a service or move
Likely cause: pump running in reverse after a phase change. Action: on start the pump should jerk anti-clockwise viewed from above; if not, swap two phases.
Vibration or rumbling
Likely cause: damaged impeller from stones, worn bearings, or the impeller rubbing the wear plate. Action: check the impeller and wear plate, reset the impeller back clearance to 0.5–1.0 mm with shims, and replace the bearings if rough.
Oil or water found in the motor housing
Likely cause: failed upper seal path, leaking cable seal or damaged O-rings. Action: carry out a full overhaul: replace seals, O-rings, cable seal and bearings, test the stator, and pressure test the oil chamber at 0.15–0.20 bar before refilling.
